Opportunistic Architecture: The Works of LTL ArchitectsFriday, Mar 12, 2010 - Sunday, May 09, 2010Curated by Paul Lewis, Marc Tsurumaki and David J. Lewis
The forthcoming exhibition is a hybrid exhibition, combining the work of LTL Architects with student-driven design projects generated at the exhibition space. The show will be organized around the question of design and environmental change, with a specific focus on the impact of rising water levels, changing weather patterns, and altered natural systems of coastal communities of the Gulf of Mexico. The exhibition will document the work of the architecture firm, LTL Architects (Lewis.Tsurumaki.Lewis) through drawings, photographs and models. Works will include speculative project, built projects, unbuilt projects and writings drawn from the last 15 years of the firm’s work and work done in response to the challenges of the exhibition theme. The exhibition will be designed by LTL Architects to maximize the use of Space 301 gallery.
In addition to the documentation, presentation and curating of the work of LTL Architects, a parallel design study will occur within the space, involving students and representatives from schools of architecture in Alabama. The students, working teams, will be asked over the course of a weekend, to design a project that relates to the specific local environmental challenges as identified and explored through the exhibited work. The purpose of this portion of the exhibition is to engage the community and educational institutions in coming to terms with the changes effecting the coastal landscape.
